What is Tantra?

Tantra is a Sanskrit word, which is related to the concept of weaving & expansion. It derives from 'tan', meaning to expand, spin out & weave one's own body. In the Hindu culture the tradition of tantra is most often associated with its goddess tradition called Shaktism.

In Hinduism it is been influential to its arts, icons & temple building practices. It is typically defined as, ' When an action or a thing once complete, becomes beneficial in several matters to one person, or too many people, that is known as tantra"-- given by Sabara, 6th century.

India was the origin for tantra ritual practice. The famous temple Khajuraho has been made by Chandela dynasty by following the ritual of tantra during 950 to 1050 by the 12th century period of time. Even if we read our sacred books,” Mahabharata & Ramayana” there also many times ritual of tantra has done many times. They used to take special classes during that period of time regarding Tantra to please their husband or their Master. There they used to have special training school specifically for the princess of the palace, so that they can learn how to keep their king happy with tantric way.

Tantric practice largely disappeared from India when Islam arrived in the 1100's century while India is the origin of Tantra practice. Eight to nine hundred years later, Tantra has sprung back to its life with all the diversity, vibrancy & ferment of its early life in the European culture.

In many ways our culture is a remarkable source to the prosperous India of the sixth century. It should not be at all surprising to find a similar diversity of teaching with such a beautiful resonance to the tantras of classical India.
